TULSA, Okla. – Ole Miss men’s tennis wrapped up singles pre-qualifying play at the 2023 All-American Championships on Sunday, with sophomores Isac Stromberg, Noah Schlagenhauf and Gordon Whitwell representing the Rebels the past two days.
All three Rebels fought to earn places in the qualifying field of competition in Tulsa, but narrowly missed the cut after finishing with a combined record of 5-3 in singles.
Stromberg kicked off the tournament strong as he defeated Temple’s Dante Russo, 6-3, 6-2, to secure the first win of the week for Ole Miss. Later that day, he earned a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, victory over Lucas Horve of Illinois. The Stockholm, Sweden, native dropped his last match against California Berkley’s Johnathan Irawanto, 3-6, 0-6.
Schlahenhauf tacked another win for the Rebels after besting Ian Rasheed from Woffford, 6-2, 7-6 (3) followed by a victory against Illinois’ Jeremy Zhang where he won 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (6). The sophomore finished his time in Tulsa after losing to Oklahoma’s Mark Mandlik, 1-6, 7-6 (5), 1-6.
The Oxford, Mississippi, native in Whitwell went 1-1 in singles after dropping a close matchup against Tennessee State’s Taj Hibbert, 2-6, 6-4, 2-6, before securing a 6-3, 6-2 win in the consolation bracket against Joao Sasso of Incarnate Word.
Although the three sophomore’s time in Tulsa has concluded, Ole Miss still has three Rebels that will be competing this week. Nikola Slavic and Lukas Engelhardt will compete in singles and doubles play while John Hallquist Lithen will only compete in singles over the next week.
