Men’s Tennis Blanks Oklahoma State, 4-0, In ITA Kickoff Opener

CHAPEL HILL—Graduate student Ryan Seggerman won the clinching match at No. 2 singles to propel North Carolina past Oklahoma State, 4-0, in the first round of the men’s ITA Kickoff before a spirited crowd at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Saturday.
 
Seggerman, ranked No. 9 nationally, came from behind in both sets and clawed past the Cowboys’ Chase Ferguson in the deciding match, 7-5, 6-4.
 
With the win, 17th-ranked Carolina improved to 3-1 this season. Oklahoma State fell to 5-1.
 
Earlier in the day, No. 13 Harvard defeated No. 21 Columbia, 4-2, in Chapel Hill in another ITA Kickoff match.
 
The Tar Heels will play the Crimson in the ITA Kickoff championship match on Sunday at 2 p.m. Columbia will play Oklahoma State in the consolation at 11 a.m. A live stream and live scoring will be available on GoHeels.com.
 
The Tar Heels took the doubles point to start the afternoon. Benjamin Kittay and Brian Cernoch took a 6-4 win at No. 2 over Alessio Basile and Chase Ferguson, followed by a 6-4 win by Will Jansen and Karl Poling at No. 3 over Alex Garcia and Francisco Pini.
 
Chris Li continued the strong start to his sophomore season, improving to 4-0 in dual match play this season with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Carl Roothman at No. 6 singles to give UNC a 2-0 lead. Jansen, the freshman from London, England, followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 over Pini that made the score 3-0 prior to Seggerman’s clinching victory.
