BERKELEY – The California men’s tennis program announced its 2022-23 schedule, including a pair of home tournaments slated for the Hellman Tennis Complex this fall.

Cal is coming off of a 2021-22 dual-match season in which, under then-first-year head coach Kris Kwinta, the Bears finished 11-10 and sent Yuta Kikuchi and Carl Emil Overbeck to the second round of the NCAA Doubles Championship.

In the fall half of the new season, several Bears will start the year by playing in the Battle in the Bay Qualifier, which Cal will host from Friday through Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Those Bears who qualify will compete in the Battle in the Bay, with the University of San Francisco hosting the tournament from Sept. 23-25 at the California Tennis Club in San Francisco. Another group of Bears will play in the Napa Valley Invitational from Sept. 23-25.

Along with collegiate competition, a few professional tournaments are on the horizon for the Bears, including a 15K Futures event slated for Sept. 26-Oct. 1 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the KPSF Open, a San Francisco tournament held Oct. 10-16.

Cal will use the fall to prepare for the spring dual-match season and to try to qualify for the ITA National Fall Championships, which will be held from Nov. 2-6 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. Key tournaments in the Bears’ quest to reach San Diego include the ITA All-American Championships (Oct. 1-9 in Tulsa, Oklahoma), ITA Northwest Regional Championships, which Cal will host from Oct. 6-10, and the ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships (Oct. 21-24 at Stanford).

The Bears will begin the New Year in Hawaii, playing, among others, Florida State on Jan. 8 in Honolulu. They host a short homestand at Hellman – Jan. 16 vs. Saint Mary’s and Jan. 22 vs. Stanford in a nonconference match – before heading to the ITA Kickoff Weekend at Texas, with Cal facing the Longhorns on Jan. 28 and a team TBA on Jan. 29. If the Bears win twice in Austin, they would advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, scheduled for Feb. 17-20 in Chicago.
