Men's Tennis Adjusts Lineup, Downs Eagles, 6-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—North Carolina got dominant performances in both doubles and singles and beat Boston College, 6-1, at the Chapel Hill Tennis Club on Sunday afternoon. It was the Tar Heels’ Atlantic Coast Conference opener and their first outdoor match of the season.

UNC played without graduate student Ryan Seggerman, part of its usual No. 1 doubles duo and the team’s regular No. 2 singles player, who missed Sunday’s match for precautionary reasons with soreness.

Head coach Sam Paul tweaked the lineup accordingly, and his squad went 2-0 in doubles and 5-1 in singles in a solid team performance.

“It was good to play outside,” Paul said afterward. “It was our first outdoor match, so it was a little bit of an adjustment for us. We only had three days to hit outside [to prepare], so we learned some stuff today and have got to get ready to rock and roll on the road now.”

“Ryan [Seggerman] is a little banged up, but he’ll be back soon. I was happy for Brian Cernoch. He’s such a good leader, solid in singles, solid in doubles. His leadership, his play are just tremendous and sets the tone.”

The teams played Sunday at the Chapel Hill Tennis Club as UNC eagerly awaits the revamped and remade Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center’s outdoor courts. Construction on the facility’s renovations are progressing, and officials hope it will debut to the public soon.

The Tar Heels grabbed the doubles point to start the chilly afternoon. Cernoch and Benjamin Kittay, ranked No. 37 in the nation, picked up a win at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, over Juan Jose Bianchi and Jake Vassel. Casey Kania and Peter Murphy clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 at No. 3 over Bennett Turner and Will Kasten. The match at No. 2 doubles between Karl Poling and Will Jansen (ranked 56th) and Max Motlagh and Mason Fung went unfinished with the score tied at 5-5.

Jansen picked up the first singles win of the day to make the score 2-0 in favor of UNC. He broke serve from Vassel in the clinching game, winning by a 6-1, 6-3 count.

Cernoch, ranked 72nd nationally, topped Motlagh, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 for a 3-0 lead. Peter Murphy followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 and Anuj Watane beat Matt Campbell, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles for a 5-0 Tar Heel advantage.

Poling overcame a sluggish start to his singles match to beat Bianchi, 6-4, 6-3 and give Carolina a 6-0 lead. BC’s Mai Gao got the Eagles on the board with a 6-4, 6-4…
