LOS ANGELES – Jorge Plans Gonzalez has signed a grant-in-aid with UCLA and will join the Bruins’ men’s tennis team for the 2023-24 season, head coach Billy Martin announced Monday. Plans Gonzalez, a transfer from Clemson, has one season of eligibility remaining.
A native of Barcelona, Spain, Plans Gonzalez piled up 50 total singles wins against 28 losses (.641) across his three years with the Tigers. He also had 29 doubles victories. Plans Gonzalez has occupied every spot in the singles and doubles lineups.
“We’re so excited to have Jorge join our team next year,” said Martin. “He’s got lots of experience after three years of playing at Clemson at a very high spot. We’re expecting very big things from him – both singles and doubles – to add to what we have coming back. We’re really excited and think he’s going to add great experience to our team.”
Plans Gonzalez spent the 2023 dual-match campaign on the top two singles courts, going 9-7 (8-6 on Court 2). He was 13-10 counting fall 2022 competitions. One of Plans Gonzalez’s two wins versus nationally-ranked foes was a 7-5, 6-2 decision over No. 26 Etienne Donnet of Louisville (April 9). Plans Gonzalez clinched three Clemson victories, collecting the fourth point against Furman (Jan. 15), Nebraska (Jan. 29) and Liberty (Feb. 10). He went 9-11 in doubles play, including a 7-2 mark alongside Max Smith.
Plans Gonzalez had a breakout 2021-22, turning in a 23-12 singles record. He was 18-9 in dual-match play, going 7-4 on Court 3. Plans Gonzalez also had success on the doubles courts, logging a 17-11 mark. Plans Gonzalez was lauded for his academic success in 2022, earning a spot on the All-ACC Academic Team. As a freshman, he won 14 of his 20 singles decisions – all in dual matches – playing on Courts 3-6. Plans Gonzalez most frequently completed contests on Court 5, where he went 9-2. He added three doubles wins.
During his junior career, Plans Gonzalez earned a wild card into qualifying for the 2019 Mutua Madrid Open in his home country. He nearly stunned then-No. 56 and current No. 46 Adrian Mannarino of France, falling in a 6-4, 6-7(5), 7-5 marathon.
