In two years as Associate Head Coach, Cloer coached five athletes to All-SEC Team selections.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Mat Cloer, Associate Head Coach of the Florida Gators Men’s Tennis Program, has accepted a position in player development with the USTA. In two years as Associate Head Coach, Cloer coached five athletes to All-SEC Team selections.
“It has been an honor coaching alongside Mat Cloer,” Head Coach Adam Steinberg said. “Mat is an excellent tennis coach and an even better human being. He will be greatly missed, and on behalf of Gator Nation, we wish him and his family all the best in his new endeavor with the USTA.”
Cloer was an essential part of a staff that led the Gators to two years of success, and led the recruiting efforts that netted the impact freshmen that lofted the team in 2024. Cloer also served as a crucial element of continuity as the program started its transition to a new Head Coach.
“Gainesville and the University of Florida will always hold a special place in my and my family’s heart,” Cloer said recently. “This community wrapped it’s arms around our family when we needed it most over these last two years, and we are forever grateful. I especially want to thank Coach Steinberg and Coach Shelton for the opportunity to be a part of such a special program. I am so excited about the future of Gator Men’s Tennis.”
Cloer joined the Men’s Tennis coaching staff in 2022 after a previous stint with USTA Player development. In his previous time with USTA, Cloer worked primarily with one of the top American players in Mackenzie McDonald, who at the time was 60th in ATP rankings. He served as the supplemental lead and helped with road support for tennis players Chris Eubanks, Kevin King and former Gator Sekou Bangoura. Cloer also provided coaching support for top women tennis players such as Whitney Osuigwe, Usue Arconada, Ashlyn Krueger and Katrina Scott, and coached Danielle Collins in 2019 to her first Grand Slam Semifinals at the Australia Open.
During that tenure with USTA Player Development, Cloer served as the point of contact for collegiate coaches and players, aiding these student-athletes in summer and post-collegiate training opportunities and helping them transition from college tennis to professional tennis. Additionally, he was in charge of putting together developmental plans, scheduling tournaments and developing relationships with coaches and players.
