Luescher, Matsuda With NCAA Doubles Qualifying Chance Sunday


LOS ANGELES – Erika Matsuda and Sophie Luescher faced their first loss of the weekend Saturday in the semifinals as the pair fell 6-3, 6-3 to the BYU duo Kendall Kovick and Yujia Huang.

The BYU pair and UCLA’s Olivia Center and Kate Fakih qualified the Bruins for the NCAA doubles championships.

One more doubles team can qualify for NCAAs with a win on Sunday morning in the 3-4 playoff, which will feature Matsuda and Luescher taking on Anna-Marie Weissheim and Amelia Honer from UC Santa Barbara.

Alexia Jacobs and Reece Carter will cruise to the consolation final Sunday morning, besting Maia Sung and Parker Fry (USC) in back-to-back tiebreaks, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 11-9.

A quarterfinal bye and a walkover in the semis puts the Huskies in the consolation finals Sunday to face Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer and Ahmani Guichard (UCLA).
