Louisville Opens the Fall Season at Wildcat Invitational


LOUISVILLE, Ky. The University of Louisville men’s team will travel to Lexington, Ky. to open up the 2022-23 season at the Kentucky Invitational Sept. 16-18. During the three-day event, everyone on the Cardinals’ roster will compete against players from Michigan State, Kentucky and Pepperdine.
 
The Cards will begin the tournament against Michigan State on Friday at 12 p.m. On Saturday, The Cardinals will take the court to face the Wildcats at 12 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on day two of the event with the site of the tournament will move to the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center due to a Kentucky home football game on Saturday.  Rounding out the tournament, the Cards will return to Lexington for a matchup with Pepperdine on Sunday at 10 a.m.
 
Heading into the season, the Cardinals’ roster includes three players in the International Tennis Association (ITA) preseason rankings, Fabien Salle, Sergio Hernandez, and Natan Rodrigues.
 
Salle enters the season ranked No. 84, while Sergio Hernandez is slotted at No. 111 in the top-125 singles rankings. The duo of Salle and Rodrigues land inside the doubles top-60 at No. 48.
 
About Louisville Men’s Tennis
Louisville returns five players from last year’s team which finished the season with a 19-9 overall record and an at-large berth in the NCAA tournament. The Cards reached the semifinals of the ACC Championship for the first time in program history after earning the No. 4 seed with a program-best nine wins in conference play.  As a team, the Cardinals appeared in the ITA team rankings 11 times, with a season-high ranking of 23.
 
Scouting the Opponents 
Michigan State, Sept. 16, p.m.
Ended last season 15-14 overall.
 
Kentucky, Sept. 17, p.m.
Finished last season 26-8 overall and 10-2 in the Southeastern Conference
Enter season with the No. 2 player in the country, Gabriel Diallo, who finished last season as an ITA First-Team All-American.
National runner-up in the 2021-22 season, falling to Virginia in the national championship match.
 
Pepperdine, Sept. 18, p.m.
Finished last season 18-8 overall and 8-1 in the West Coast Conference.
Advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament in the 2021-22 season.
Return seven players from last year’s team.
