Lair's Comeback Highlights ITA Regionals for Spartans


ANN ARBOR, MICH. – The Spartans concluded play at the ITA Midwest Regionals on Sunday, Oct. 22, highlighted by senior Graydon Lair’s comeback win in the round of 32 main draw singles. 

Lair came back from down 5-0 in third set to defeat Notre Dame’s Nil Giraldez, 7-6, 6-1, 7-5 on Saturday. Prior to the comeback victory, Tulsa, Oklahoma native also took down the No. 3 seed in the tournament, Hunter Heck of Illinois, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 64 on Saturday morning. Lair would eventually fall in the round of 16 to Ohio State’s Bryce Nakashima who as of Sunday is still alive in the singles semis. 

Also winning round of 64 singles main draw matches on Saturday was junior Max Sheldon and graduate senior Sebastien Collard. Sheldon defeated Notre Dame’s Kyran Magimay 6-4, 6-2 while Collard took care of Northwestern’s Jackson Caldwell, 6-1, 6-1. 

In first-set-wins doubles play, the ITA preseason duo of Ozan Baris and Sheldon played into the round of 16, falling to Tracy/Bernard of Ohio State. The MSU pair had a first round bye, beat Miller/Godi of Northwestern in the round of 32 and Miyoshi/Debru in the round of 16. Tracy and Bernard are slotted to play in the doubles semis as of Sunday as well.

The combo of Lair and Collard also had a second round victory after a bye, beating Wisconsin’s Hildebrandt/Popovic before dropping out to Cooksey/Bickerseth of Michigan in the round of 16. 

Next, the Spartans will bypass the scheduled Men’s Intercollegiate Championships with select players competing in the ITA Fall National Championships in San Diego, Calif. from Nov. 1-5 and the BIg Ten Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis. from Nov. 3-5.
