Lady Vols Selected as ITA Ohio Valley Regional Hosts

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee women’s tennis has been selected to host the 2022 ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championship which will take place from October 19th to 24th at Barksdale Stadium and Goodfriend Tennis Center, along with satellite sites as needed.

The Lady Volunteers were selected as site hosts for the first time since the fall of 2014. Tennessee also welcomed the 2010 ITA Regionals to Rocky Top.

“It is very exciting that we bring such a high-profile event to Rocky Top this fall,” head coach Alison Ojeda said. “Our selection to host showcases that we have one of the top facilities in the region and I know that the tennis community in Knoxville, like Knoxville Racquet Club and Tyson Park, will welcome this event with open arms.”

Tennessee comes off a highly successful 2021 ITA Regional Championship where both Elza Tomase and Rebeka Mertena advanced to the singles finale on Monday. Tomase was crowned tournament champion and both Lady Vols punched their tickets to the ITA National Fall Championship in San Diego, California.

“After having great success at the tournament last season, I am looking forward to our team competing and striving another successful tournament,” Ojeda said. “This is also a big opportunity for our newcomers to play some high-level tennis so they can get the feeling of what the SEC season will be like next spring.”

Between both the men’s and women’s sides, Barksdale Stadium and Goodfriend Tennis Center have hosted seven ITA Regional Championships, not including this upcoming season, showcasing the quality of the surface and the organization of UT-hosted events.

Further information on the tournament will come at a later date. The tournament’s home page can be found by clicking here.
