KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Lady Vols showcased a very successful fall debut at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic hosted at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. Five Volunteers were crowned champions of their respective flights.
Matches started on Friday Sept. 15, when The Big Orange put up six doubles victories and four singles wins. Graduate student Alana Wolfberg, seniors Esther Adeshina, Lauren Anzalotta, Sofia Cabezas, Eleonora Molinaro and sophomore Leyla Britez Risso all tallied doubles wins. In singles, Elza Tomase, Adeshina, Anzalotta, and Molinaro added victories.
On Saturday, two pairs of doubles partners secured wins and were named champions of their flights. From flight one, Adeshina and Cabezas defeated Rajecki/Zampardo from NC State in an 8-7 victory. In flight three, Anzalotta and Molinaro rallied over Malkin and Lancelot from South Carolina during an 8-1 win.
The Lady Vols concluded play on Sunday by clinching a singles victory from Molinaro. Molinaro defeated Anastasiia Lopata from Georgia in a three-set thriller to win flight number seven. Anzalotta also played spectacularly in singles and finished as the runner-up in flight number five. Anzalotta lost to Georgia’s Mai Nirundorn 6-2, 6-4 in the championship match.
All together, The Lady Vols concluded the weekend with a 21-7 record at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic.
The team is back on the road Sept. 22, when they travel to compete in the Wolfpack Classic in Cary, North Carolina. Action kicks off on Friday and extends through Sunday.
