Kumhom Caps Strong Showing at ITA Northwest Regionals

STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Fifa Kumhom won her opening-match Saturday before falling in the Round of 16 at the 2023 ITA Northwest Regionals, played at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
 
Kumhom opened the day with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over Washington’s Erika Matsuda to reach the Round of 16. There, she faced No. 4-seed Katja Wiersholm of Cal, falling to two close sets, 6-3, 6-3. Kumhom is the first Cougar to reach the Round of 16 at the ITA Northwest Regionals since former teammate Savannah Ly-Nguyen did so in 2021.
 
Junior Elyse Tse also played in the main draw Saturday, falling to Mayya Gorbunova of Sacramento State, 6-3, 6-1.
 
In Saturday’s consolation round, freshman Martina Markov posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Santa Clara’s Velizara Fileva while Fresno State’s Hannah Pieper defeated WSU’s Tiffany Phout, the score was not available.
 
In doubles play, No. 4-seeds Eva Alvarez Sande and Tse advanced to the third round with an 8-6 win over Portland’s Aleksandra Dimitrijevic and Rimona Rouf. WSU’s Hanina Abouelsaad and Markov fell 8-1 to Washington’s Daria Detkovskaya and Matsuda, while Kumhom and Yura Nakagawa dropped a close, 8-7 tiebreaker to No. 2-seeded Yinglak Jittakoat and Matilde Magrini of Fresno State.
 
WSU will continue play at the ITA Northwest Regionals Sunday.
