GAINESVILLE Fla. – Kevin Edengren has been tabbed as the SEC Freshman of the Week for his efforts in Florida’s win over the Vanderbilt Commodores on Friday.
Kevin Edengren and Sophomore Tanapatt Nirundorn started the match for Florida by sealing the doubles point with a 6-4 set win over Panarin/Coquelin.
In singles play, Edengren took a 4-3 lead in his first set in Friday’s match in Gainesville before he appeared to experience cramping in his lower back and legs. The match went into a long delay as he was tended to by training staff. After receiving assistance, Edengren returned revitalized, finishing a 6-4 first set.
Edengren took an early advantage in set two, before Vanderbilt’s Hugo Coquelin battled to a 5-4 lead. Despite the delays and Edengren’s fatigue, the Gator freshman went on a three-game tear to seal a 7-5 second set and his sixth straight-sets victory of the season.
Edengren’s display of resilience set the tone for the rest of Florida’s team who watched as he returned to the court after the long delay, and as his win sealed the dual match for the Gators. His point finished a 4-3 win of the Dual with Vanderbilt, which propelled Florida into ITA’s top-25 team rankings.
Freshman Firepower
Florida’s youth movement has made waves in the collegiate tennis world all season, but have particularly come on during SEC play. Florida now boasts three SEC Freshman of the Week recipients as Edengren joins Jeremy Jin (FOW March 6) and Aidan Kim (FOW April 3). Florida is the only team in the conference with three wins of the weekly honor.
Edengren’s honor marks the first time in program history that Florida has had three different players receive Freshman of the Week honors in a single season. The Gators are the only team in the conference this season to see multiple different players receive the weekly honor.
