CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois junior Kenta Miyoshi was named the Big Ten Men’s Tennis Player of the Week following his performance at Battle In The Bay, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Miyoshi went 4-1 in singles play during his four days in San Francisco, with all four wins coming in straight sets against ranked opponents. Despite dropping his opening singles match, the Japan native bounced back with four consecutive victories to win the men’s singles consolation draw.
Miyoshi picked up his first singles win of the season in a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over No. 103 Maxi Homberg of Pepperdine in the first round of the consolation draw. He then defeated No. 37 Pedro Vives, the third-seeded player at the event, in two sets, 7-5, 6-4, to advance to the consolation semifinal. Miyoshi secured his third singles win of the weekend with a 6-3, 7-5 victory against No. 109 Casper Christensen of Arizona, which saw him earn a spot in the men’s singles consolation final.
With a 7-5, 6-2 win over San Diego’s Savriyan Danilov, Miyoshi clinched his first hardware of the 2024-25 season as the champion of the consolation draw.
He also teamed up with Karlis Ozolins in doubles play and picked up an 8-5 decision over Cal duo Derrick Chen and Timofey Stepanov in the first round of the men’s doubles main draw.
Miyoshi is the first Fighting Illini men’s tennis student-athlete to earn Big Ten Player of the Week honors since Hunter Heck on March 13. This is Miyoshi’s first time achieving the conference-wide award.
