ORLANDO, Fla. – In the first round of the NCAA Singles Championships, #40 Jonas Ziverts defeated #24 Justin Boulais (Ohio State) 7-5, 6-4 in a midnight match at the USTA National Campus. Fellow Wildcat #55 Colton Smith fell in three sets, including two tiebreakers, to #11 Cannon Kingsley (Ohio State) in the round of 64 (6-7(0), 7-6 (1), 1-6).
Due to multiple rain delays, Ziverts finally took his first serve against Boulais nearly 4.5 hours after the initial scheduled start time around 11:30 p.m. ET. The Wildcat secured his spot in the second round after defeating the Buckeye in straight sets, managing to grab the first one after holding for the deciding game then breaking Boulais on a deuce point to finalize the win. The victory marks Ziverts’ second advancement to the round of 32 at the NCAA Singles Championships. He will battle University of Florida’s #32 Axel Nefve tomorrow, Tuesday May 23 at 3 p.m. ET (12 p.m. MST). The match is scheduled to take place outdoors.
