Johns, Rodenas Tabbed All-Americans - Duke University

DURHAM – Senior Garrett Johns and freshman Pedro Rodenas were tabbed 2023 ITA men’s tennis singles All-Americans, the organization announced Monday.

The honor is given to student-athletes that earn a top 16 seed in the NCAA Singles Championship, advance to the round of 16 in the NCAA Singles Championship, or finish in the top 20 of the final ITA singles rankings.

They become the first Blue Devils to receive the honor since Nicolas Alvarez in 2015 and the first pair of singles players to earn the accolade in the same season since Reid Carleton and Henrique Cunha in 2011.

As Duke’s top singles player, Johns concluded the year with a 20-15 overall ledger, including a 9-16 seed at the NCAA Singles Championship. He ranked in the top 20 for the entire dual match season and climbed as high as No. 4 in the ITA rankings earlier in the year. The Atlanta, Ga., native posted a 14-11 dual record to go along with his 8-11 mark against nationally ranked players. In addition, he was a unanimous first team All-ACC selection.

Rodenas quickly made a name for himself during his first season in Durham, earning 2023 ACC Rookie of the Year honors. The Madrid, Spain, native posted a 33-7 overall record, including a 26-2 dual match ledger. He finished a perfect 17-0 on court two and was 9-4 against nationally ranked foes. The rookie wrapped up his season in the NCAA Singles Championship round of 16 to join Johns as an All-American.
