Johns, Rodenas Conclude Season at NCAA Doubles Championship

ORLANDO, Fla. – Duke senior Garrett Johns and freshman Pedro Rodenas had their strong doubles campaign come to an end on Thursday in the round of 16 of the 2023 NCAA Doubles Championship.

The Blue Devils’ top doubles tandem dropped a 7-5, 7-6 (5) decision to 14th-ranked Rafa Izquierdo Luque and Joseph Wayand of NC State at the USTA National Campus.

Duke fell behind 1-0 early before the Wolfpack created a 4-1 gap between the teams in the opening set. NC State increased its edge to 5-3 but the Blue Devils battled back to tie things up at 5-5. Unfortunately, the Wolfpack tallied the last two points of the set to register the 7-5 victory. The second frame was much like the first, but it took a tiebreak for NC State to pull out the 7-6 (5) win to advance to the quarterfinals.

The Blue Devil pair finishes the season with a 23-7 overall record and a 3-2 mark against nationally ranked opponents. In addition, the duo concluded dual action with a 17-4 ledger, including a 7-0 record in ACC play.
