The five Gators in qualifying action all won their morning matches, with Jin and Johnson following that up with afternoon victories. Among 128 players competing in the qualifying draw for 16 main draw slots, all five Gators made it to the final 32 and the five combined for a 12-3 record over Monday and Tuesday.
Jin, playing in his first collegiate action, has defeated three consecutive ranked opponents to reach the main draw, including a top-60 opponent in Justin Schlageter of Oklahoma on Tuesday afternoon.
Johnson battled to an 8-6 third-set tiebreaker win to defeat Ohio State’s Bryce Nakashima in his first match of the day, then used a 10-8 first-set tiebreaker vs. South Carolina’s #59 Casey Hoole to set up a straight-sets win.
