Jay Friend and Colton Smith Advance to Consolation Semifinals


TULSA, Okla. – Senior Colton Smith and junior Jay Friend wrapped Saturday at the ITA All-American Championships with two singles wins each, allowing them to move through to the semi-final round of the consolation draw. 

Up first this morning was No. 5 Colton Smith [5] up against Matthew Forbes of Michigan State. Smith took the first set 6-2, and held off Forbes in a breaker in the second to win the match 6-2, 7-6 (4). Later that afternoon, Smith entered the quarterfinals of the draw with a match up against No. 11 Paul Inchauspe [9-16] of Princeton. The Wildcat dominated his second match of the day going 6-2, 6-2. Smith is scheduled to play No. 14 Thomas Paulsell [9-16] in the semifinal at 9:00 a.m. MST. 

No. 15 Jay Friend [9-16] began Saturday with a match up against No. 10 Shunsuke Mitsui of Tennessee. Friend secured a huge 7-5, 6-1 win over the top ten player, moving through in the draw. In quartfinals, Friend was matched up against No. 94 Daniel Sancho Arbizu of Denver. The junior Wildcat dominated the match, rolling over Sancho Arbizu 6-1, 6-1. Friend is now set to play No. 33 Braden Shick of NC State in the semifinal at 9:00 a.m. MST. 

If either of the two, or both, win in tomorrows semifinal, they will automatically qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship.
