Illini Return Home for Pair of Top-20 Matchups


CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Fighting Illini men’s tennis team will come home to host No. 8 Duke and a rematch with No. 17 North Carolina at Atkins Tennis Center this weekend. 

Illinois will play the Blue Devils on Friday at 6 p.m. CT and the Tar Heels on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT. Admission is free. 

Mroz Clinches Win Over North Carolina

The Illini are coming off a big upset win over then-No. 16 North Carolina at ITA Kickoff Weekend. 

Illinois took the match, 4-3, after a 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-3 win from William Mroz

The Illini doubles pairs were dominant as well, starting with Mathis Debru and Kenta Miyoshi defeating Peter Murphy and Patrick Schoen, 6-3. Hunter Heck and Karlis Ozolins clinched the doubles point shortly after, as the pair emerged victorious against Will Jansen and Karl Poling, 6-4

The Tar Heels came back for blood in singles, taking the first three matches. Heck turned it around, beating Poling, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Alex Petrov followed suit, defeating Schoen 7-6 (5), 6-2. 

Scouting Report

North Carolina is coming off a 4-2 win over Florida in the consolation round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend. 

Prior to the win, Illinois knocked UNC out of the running to participate in the ITA Team Indoor Championship with the 4-3 win on Jan. 27.

Duke is also fresh off its ITA Kickoff Weekend, in which they defeated NC State, 4-0, and Middle Tennessee, 4-0, landing the Blue Devils in the ITA Team Indoor Tournament.
