TEMPE, Ariz. – The Illinois men’s tennis team clutched 16 wins at the Sun Devil Hidden Dual from Jan. 12-13 in Tempe, Ariz., hosted by Arizona State.
DAY ONE
The first day kicked off with doubles play with graduate student Oliver Okonkwo and sophomore Mathis Debru winning 6-2 against Arizona State’s Jacob Bullard and Roi Ginat.
Karlis Ozolins and William Mroz also picked up a 6-2 win, defeating Sun Devils Max McKennon and Constantinos Koshis.
Lucas Horve and Gabrielius Guzauskas won their doubles match 6-4 against Grand Canyon State’s Martium Maruji and Loic van Zeggelaar.
Alex Petrov and Nic Meister dropped their match to GCU’s Alfred Almasi and Paolo Rosati, 7-6 (tie break unavailable).
In singles play, Debru, Ozolins, Meister, Horve, Okonkwo and Mroz all won their singles matches – Debru, 6-4, 6-4 against Ginat, Ozolins, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-5 against Bullard, Meister, 4-6 6-1, 6-1 against Bullard, Horve, 6-2, 6-2 against Almasi, Okonkwo, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 against Maruji and Mroz, 6-4, 6-0 against Koshis. Petrov lost his match, 7-6 1-6 4-6 to McKennon.
DAY TWO
Horve and Guzauskas stayed on the winning side in doubles defeating GCU, 6-2 while Mroz and Ozolins got the 6-2 win over Bullard and Ginat.
ASU’s McKennon and Koshis defeated Debru and Okonkwo, 7-6 (7-4), and Petrov and Meister fell to GCU
In singles action, Mroz picked up a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 victory over ASU’s McKennon, while Okonkwo won 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 against Koshis. Meister, Debru and Horve also picked up wins against GCU – Petrov fell in his match, 7-5, 6-3 to Ginat.
The Illini will stay in Tempe and face Wichita State at 12 p.m. CT and Bryant 4 p.m. CT.
