Illini Earn Four Wins After Day 1 of Knoxville Showdown


CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Illinois men’s tennis Nic Meister, Oliver Okonkwo, Mathis Debru and Kenta Miyoshi gathered two wins in doubles play and two wins in singles play against MTSU, Columbia and North Carolina on the first day of the Knoxville Showdown hosted by Tennessee. 

Graduate student Meister paired up with freshman Miyoshi for a doubles match against MTSU’s Marcel Kamrowski and Ondrej Horak, beating them 6-1. 

The two transfers, Okonkwo and Debru, matched up together and beat Columbia’s Hugo Hashimoto and Ishaan Ravichander, 6-3. 

In singles action, Meister swept MTSU’s Shu Matsuoka, 6-1, 6-1 while Debru beat North Carolina’s Mark Dillon 6-2, 6-2. Miyoshi battled in his match, but fell to Coumbia’s Theo Winegar, 6-3, 6-7(3), 7-6(4).
