Huskies Start 8-0 In Singles

SEATTLE – All eight names on the 2022-23 Husky roster grabbed wins to start their seasons today, as Washington began fall competition at home with the Husky Invitational. The Dawgs were 8-0 in singles matches, seven wins against DePaul and one against Portland, with just one lost set on the day.
 
It was a busy day one for the Dawgs, starting early this morning with singles at the Nordstrom Tennis Center and then moving outside for a couple rounds of doubles at Bill Quillian Stadium. The “hidden dual” format has teams matching up head to head in singles and doubles, but not necessarily in a one-to-six lineup format.
 
Three players picked up their first wins as Huskies today. Transfers Jennifer Kerr and Melissa Sakar each rolled to wins, as did freshman Erika Matsuda. Kerr defeated Depaul’s Mayya Perova, 6-1, 6-2, and Sakar won a 6-0, 6-2 match with Lenka Antonijevic. Matsuda won her first collegiate match, 6-3, 6-2, over Greta Carbone.
 
Returning Huskies Hikaru Sato, Sarah-Maude Fortin, Astrid Olsen, Ashley Chang, and Yolanda Lin were all winners as well. Chang was the only Husky into a third set, but she pulled away for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win over DePaul’s Maddie Yergler. Lin played the only match against a non-Blue Demon, as she defeated Rimona Rouf of Portland, 6-3, 6-4.
 
Washington then went on to doubles play in the afternoon, going 5-3 overall, including 3-0 in matches against Oregon, and 2-1 against Washington State.
 
Hikaru Sato and Melissa Sakar were 2-0 in doubles, as were Astrid Olsen and Sarah-Maude Fortin. Sato and Sakar had a 6-2 win over Oregon’s Petchey/Teixido Garcia, and then earned a 7-6 win over WSU’s Murphy/Tse. Olsen and Fortin had a 7-6 tiebreak win over Mould/Chan of Oregon, and a 6-1 win over the Cougars’ Nakagawa/Alvarez Sande.
 
Competition continues over the weekend in the NTC. Matches start at 10 a.m. with Washington State and DePaul playing singles. The Huskies will start in the afternoon with doubles against DePaul, and then UW and Oregon will play singles approximately at 2 p.m.
