Huskies Split Matches Over Weekend With Arizona Schools

TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 25 Washington women’s tennis (15-7, 4-3 Pac-12) split the weekend of matches down in the desert. The Dawgs were swept 4-0 by Arizona State Friday and then came back for redemption at Arizona Sunday morning to earn a 4-0 win.

On Saturday afternoon at Arizona State, the Sun Devils outplayed the Huskies across doubles and singles play.

Alexia Jacobs and Astrid Olsen dropped their match on 1 against the 34th-ranked ASU pair of Fontenel and Spaka, 6-4.

Arizona State’s Morlet and Svetac defeated Erika Matsuda and Dariya Detkovskaya to hand the Husky pair just their second loss of the season and secure the doubles point for the home team.

The Dawgs couldn’t pick up the slack from doubles action when they headed to singles, as three ASU singles courts picked up wins all in straight sets.

Sarah-Maude Fortin (6-2, 6-4) and Melissa Sakar (6-3, 6-3) dropped straight sets on 5 and 4 respectively as the Huskies continued into a three-point deficit.

Erika Matsuda wasn’t able to tame ASU’s No. 79 Morlet on the top court as Arizona State clinched a 4-0 win.

Sunday was a different story, however, as the Huskies started out strong against the Arizona Wildcats. The top two doubles courts secured wins to clinch the doubles point for the Huskies.

Courts 4, 5 and 6 made all the difference for Washington, as the bottom three courts clinched the three points the Dawgs needed to sweep the match, 4-0.

Dariya Detkovskaya’s dominant 6-0 first set win was followed up by a 6-4 advantage, enough for the senior to be the first singles court to wrap up play.

Sarah-Maude Fortin earned a win in two sets to put the Dawgs one point away from clinching before Melissa Sakar secured the match on court 4.

Washington will be home next weekend for a match against Cal on Friday, April 12 and Sunday, April 14 vs. Stanford. Sunday will be senior day where the Dawgs will honor seniors Dariya Detkovskaya, Sarah-Maude Fortin, Astrid Olsen and Melissa Sakar.
