Huskies Sign Canada’s Gagnon - University of Washington Athletics

SEATTLE – Washington has added another new member to its 2023-24 incoming class, signing Canadian junior champion Catherine Gagnon. A native of Westmount near Montreal, Gagnon is the third UW commit for next season, and the second incoming freshman.

Gagnon won the Canadian U16 doubles title in 2022 and was a finalist in singles and doubles in the Canadian U18 Indoor Championships this April. She joins San Diego State transfer Dariya Detkovskaya and prep commit Alexia Jacobs, who also hails from Canada, in the 23-24 class.

“We are thrilled to have Catherine join the program this fall,” said Head Coach Robin Stephenson. “We have been highly impressed by her professionalism, her communication and her work ethic. She is a high-level individual with her best tennis definitely ahead of her and we believe that she’s going to soar in the college tennis environment. She has high goals for herself and the team. She absolutely loves the sport and is hungry to develop and is a relentless competitor. She is going to be a blast to work with and has so many intangibles that she will add to our program. She exemplifies what it means to be a Husky student-athlete and we are so fortunate to have her joining us.”

Gagnon and Jacobs are the latest in a Canadian pipeline that includes rising senior Sarah-Maude Fortin (Montreal), and recent standouts such as UW wins record-holder Vanessa Wong (Toronto) and All-American Stacey Fung (Vancouver) who recently won her third pro title of 2023.

“I am fully committed to UW as a student-athlete who is eager to participate in the team’s success both on and off the court,” says Gagnon. “I’m looking forward to building a strong and lasting relationship with the coaching staff and my teammates. Can’t wait to join the Husky family!”
