Huskies One Point Short In Stillwater

STILLWATER, Okla. – Washington fell one dual point and just a couple games short of getting a breakthrough road win today at Oklahoma State, as the Cowboys won four of six singles matches to take the 4-3 victory. The Huskies (4-3) won the doubles point and got singles wins from Cesar Bouchelaghem and Dzianis Zharyn, who both remained unbeaten in dual play.

The Dawgs got the start they wanted on the road with a doubles point win. Zharyn and Bouchelaghem were 6-3 winners at the top spot over OSU’s Becroft and Zink. Oklahoma State had a 6-2 win at second doubles, but Han-Chih Lin and Jim Hendrikx completed a 7-5 victory at No. 3 over Allen/Pini to clinch the point.

Going into singles up 1-0, the teams split the six first sets in singles, Washington winning on the top three courts, and Oklahoma State on the lower three. None of the Huskies were able to turn their matches around on courts four, five, and six, as OSU got straight set wins in the lower half of the lineup.

Bouchelaghem was the one Husky to take a straight set victory, as he held off Alex Garcia, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 3 singles. That improves him to 7-0 in singles play with just one set dropped.

On the top two courts, the Cowboys evened the matches with second set wins. On court No. 1 , Lin had a 6-1 first set win over Tyler Zink, but Zink won the second, 6-2. The third set would be close the whole way, but at 5-5, Zink held serve and then broke Lin in the 12th game to end it, 7-5, and clinch the victory.

Zharyn had a 4-2 lead in his third set over Chase Ferguson at No. 2 when the match was decided, and the two played it to completion, with Zharyn completing his win, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, to make the final score, 4-3. Zharyn is now 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

UW will remain on the road next week, traveling to Eugene for the annual non-conference match with the Oregon Ducks.
