HONOLULU – Washington said aloha (the goodbye version) to Oahu with a victory over the host University of Hawaii today, securing a tough doubles point win and adding four wins in singles for a 5-2 victory. The Huskies improve to 2-0 on the young season, heading home for the home opener next Saturday.
Washington took the 1-0 lead with two tiebreak wins at second and third doubles. Sarah-Maude Fortin and Erika Matsuda got the first win, over Takamura/Vilcek, at second doubles. Then Melissa Sakar and Hikaru Sato had another 7-6 win at third doubles over Kim/Merrill to clinch the point.
The Dawgs then earned four straight singles wins in straight sets to put the match away, leading 5-0, before Hawaii got the last two points.
Sakar won first at No. 5, losing just one game to Madison Kim, 6-0, 6-1. Astrid Olsen had a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Satsuki Takamura, then Jennifer Kerr got the clincher with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles over Klara Novakova.
Sato lost just one game in the No. 1 singles match, beating Nikol Homolkova, 6-0, 6-1. Erika Matsuda dropped a 7-6, 6-1 match at No. 6 singles, and Fortin lost a third set super-tiebreak at No. 2 singles after the match was clinched.
