ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Senior Han-Chih Lin completed a 2-0 week in Big Ten country but the Dawgs finished 1-1 as a team as they dropped a 4-1 decision to 11th-ranked Michigan today at the Varsity Tennis Center. Lin was a straight set winner at third singles but the Wolverines took the doubles point and three other singles matches in straight sets.
Washington falls to 3-3 and went 1-1 on its Midwest swing, having defeated Wisconsin on Friday.
In doubles, Michigan had matching 6-2 victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the 1-0 lead. 12th-ranked Dzianis Zharyn and Cesar Bouchelaghem had a 5-4 lead at No. 1 doubles when the point was clinched and they did not finish.
In singles play, Lin cruised to an impressive 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Bjorn Swenson. The Huskies had early leads in the second sets on four courts, but only Lin was able to convert.
Michigan’s Will Cooksey defeated freshman Ivan Sodan, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 5 singles, and sophomore Brett Pearson fell to Nicholas Steiglehner, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6 singles, to put UM a point away.
Zharyn was trying to extend things at No. 2 singles against 61st-ranked Jacob Bickersteth, down a set but holding a 4-3 lead in the second, but Bickersteth rallied and got a break of serve and served it out for the 6-4, 6-4 win that clinched. Bouchelaghem was facing 9th-ranked Gavin Young at No. 1 singles and was down a set but leading 5-4 in the second set at No. 1 singles. Nedim Suko was down a set and a break on the No. 4 court.
