Huskies 3-0 In Pac-12 After Defeating Arizona State

SEATTLE – It may have been sunny, but the Purple Reign never stops in Seattle as Washington Women’s Tennis topped the Sun Devils at Bill Quillian Stadium. It was the first home outdoor match of the year for the 21st-ranked Dawgs, but their game worked just as well as it has been inside the Nordstrom Tennis Center.

The Huskies earned the doubles point and went on to earn three singles wins for a 4-1 victory over 29th-ranked Arizona State. The Huskies advance to 3-0 in conference play and are now 11-3 overall.

“Really happy with this match,” said Head Coach Robin Stephenson. “We just finished finals week and I thought the girls did such a great job staying focused and on a mission. We knew ASU was tough and we’d have to play one of our best matches. I thought we played one of our best doubles points. I was really impressed with how our girls went from indoors to outdoors. I thought we just played really solid and competed really hard.

“I think we’re one of the toughest teams out there. I told them we’ve faced a lot of things already, and no matter what we face we’ve seen it before, so we’re just getting tougher with every match we play.”

The Huskies started off strong in doubles. The duo of Astrid Olsen and Jennifer Kerr got the first win (6-2) at No. 2 doubles. Shortly after, Sarah-Maude Fortin and Erika Matsuda mirrored their teammates score and cliched the doubles point for the Dawgs at No. 3 singles, defeating Argyrokastriti and Fontenel, 6-2.

The Dawgs earned two straight singles wins, before Arizona State scored their first point of the match.

120th-ranked Jennifer Kerr finished first at No. 4 singles and defeated Sedona Gallagher 6-0, 6-3 to raise the Huskies lead to 2-0. Kerr led 6-0, 5-0 en route to the win, improving her dual record to 11-1.

No. 110 Hikaru Sato was down 0-4 in her second set, but came back with 6 games in a row to defeat 113th-ranked Chelsea Fontenel 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.

Sarah-Maude Fortin fell short to Domenika Turkovic 6-7, 2-6 at No. 2 singles for ASU’s first point. But Astrid Olsen cliched the win for the Dawgs after defeating Marianna Argyrokastriti 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Olsen also clinched the win over UCLA two weeks back.

The Huskies will stay at home and take on another big challenge in Arizona on Sunday, March 19 at 11:00 a.m.
