Huskers Finish Play at the Lawrence Invite


Lawrence, Kan. – The Huskers kicked off their season with a tournament hosted by KU at the Jayhawk Tennis Center this week. Anfisa Danilchenko led the Huskers as she made her way through round robin play and single elimination to qualify for Sunday’s third-place final match.  
 
Sophomore Anfisa Danilchenko went 3-3 in singles play at the tournament this week. She began the week on Monday facing KU’s Mariana Mayoma Velasquez, falling in three set, 6-2, 5-7, 2-6. Danilchenko then played her second match of the tournament against Audrey Spencer, she was defeated 6-3, 6-2. On Wednesday, Danilchenko defeated her opponent Isabella Dunlap 7-5, 6-2. The first round of elimination play took place on Thursday. Danilchenko played in the third-place playoffs against Reya Coe. Danilchenko defeated Coe 6-3, 6-2. Danilchenko then qualified for the semifinals match against Samantha Alicea. Danilchenko won the match 6-3, 6-3. On Sunday, Danilchenko faced Kansas State’s Florentine Dekkers in the final match of the third-place tournament. Danilchenko was defeated 6-2, 6-4. 
 
Junior Vivien Sandberg had a 3-2 record this week. Sandberg started play on Sunday for NU. She faced Lucy Loy, defeating her 6-1, 6-0. Sandberg played her second match of the week on Monday against Isabel Adrover Gallego. Sandberg won the match 6-4, 6-1. On Tuesday, Sanberg lost her first match of the week when she played Washburn University’s Sofia Smagina. Sandberg was defeated 6-3, 6-2. Sandberg played her fourth match of the tournament against KU’s Jocelyn Massey. Sandberg won the match 6-1, 6-1. Sandberg then qualified for the second-place playoffs. Sandberg competed against Morgan Pyrz and was defeated in three sets 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

Senior Samantha Alicea went 2-3 in singles play this week. Alicea began the week on Monday playing Iowa’s Samantha Mannix. Alicea lost the match 6-3, 6-3. Alicea faced Harper Santos in her second match of the week. Santos defeated her 6-3, 6-2. On Wednesday, Alicea faced Loy, defeating Loy 6-1, 6-3. On Thursday, Alicea played in the third-place qualifying round. She faced Rozalia Gruszczynska from K-State, defeating her 6-0, 6-2. Alicea competed in the third-place semifinal match against Danilchenko. Alicea was defeated 6-3, 6-3.
