Hui Wins US Junior Open

NEW YORK – Stanford’s incoming freshman Katherine Hui raised the trophy on Saturday as the champion of the U.S. Open in the junior division. Hui rattled off six consecutive straight set wins, culminating in a 6-4, 6-4 win in the finale.

Hui defeated four of the event’s top 10 seeded players, beginning with No. 2 Lucciana Perez Alarcon in the round of 32, 6-4, 6-0. Each of Hui’s final three opponents were ranked in the event, with the San Diego native dispatching No. 2 Ena Koike, 6-0, 6-3, in the quarterfinals and No. 10 Laura Samsonova in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-3.

One of the top two recruits in the country, along with new teammate Eleana Yu, Hui faced ninth-seeded Tereza Valentova in the championship match. Following an early lightning delay, Hui rolled to a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
