Hudd Named SEC Player of the Week

After a 4-0 weekend capped by his clinch in Tennessee’s 4-0 win over No. 4 Kentucky Sunday, Emile Hudd has been named SEC Player of the Week for the first time in his career, the conference announced Wednesday.

A graduate student from London, England, Hudd’s straight-set, 6-3, 7-6(5), singles triumph over Kentucky’s 27th-ranked Alafia Ayeni at the No. 2 lineup position Sunday served as the clinching point in Tennessee’s first top-five victory since toppling No. 3 Baylor in last season’s NCAA quarterfinals, 4-3, on May 19.

Hudd’s win over Ayeni was one of his three ranked victories over the weekend.

In doubles against the Wildcats, Hudd teamed up with Shunsuke Mitsui to clinch the doubles point on court two. The UT duo took down the No. 38 pairing of Joshua Lapadat and JJ Mercer, 7-5.

In Tennessee’s 5-2 win Friday over No. 12 Mississippi State, Hudd and Mitsui trounced the 74th-ranked doubles pair of Ewen Lumsden and Petar Jovanovic, 6-0, at the No. 2 spot. That effort was followed by Hudd’s straight-set singles victory over the Bulldogs’ Petar Jovanovic, 6-1, 7-6(7), on court two.

At 23-4 on the doubles courts this season, Hudd is 17-3 (8-0 SEC) in dual doubles action. Riding a career-best 13-match doubles winning streak, dating to Feb. 17, Hudd moved up 16 spots in this week’s updated ITA doubles rankings, to No. 44 nationally with Mitsui.

Hudd is 8-2 (5-2 SEC) at the No. 2 singles spot this spring and 15-3 (8-0 SEC) at the No. 2 doubles position this season.
