It was a sunny 60 degree day in Blacksburg, Va and Jim Thompson and Co. were hoping to keep it that way with the No. 43 Miami Hurricanes swirling into town. Hungry for their first win since Feb. 5, the Hokies came out firing on all cylinders with Matt Harper and Frank Thompson racing to a 6-2 win on Court 3 to put Tech in good position. Jordan Chrysostom and Ryan Fishback did their thing on Court 1, beating their Miami challengers 6-3 to put the Hokies up going into singles.
Tech carried this momentum over jumping ahead to a commanding 3-1 behind a pair of victories starting with Scott Sculley, who completed a 2-0 weekend defeating Franco Aubone, 6-0, 6-3. Ryan Fishback followed that up with his second ranked win of the season, 7-5, 6-3, over No. 28 Dan Martin getting the Hokies within one win of clinching.
Manuel Goncalves put forth a gritty performance, winning the second set 6-4, but ultimately came up short turning the attention to Court 2 with the match tied 3-3. Alvaro Saez-Royuela battled in a back-and-forth affair against No. 70 Martin Katz, earning the 5-4 lead in the third set and looking to break Katz in order to finish the match. The Castellon, Spain native jumped ahead early and held strong, charging the net to hammer the ball home and pick up Tech’s first ranked victory of the season, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
