Bulldogs Fall To No. 18 Vanderbilt


STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women’s tennis fell to No. 18 Vanderbilt 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.

Gia Cohen and Dharani Niroshan each claimed singles victories for the 69th-ranked Bulldogs, who fell to 10-3 overall and 0-2 in Southeastern Conference play.

Cohen took down Vanderbilt’s No. 96 Holly Staff 7-6(2), 6-1 to earn her third ranked win of career. With the win, Cohen moves to 8-2 during dual play and earns her fifth straight victory.

Niroshan claimed a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 victory over Marcella Cruz. Niroshan’s win moves her to 6-2 in dual play and it marks her fourth straight win.

Emmanouela Antonaki faced 45th-ranked CΓ©lia-Belle Mohr at the No. 1 position. Antonaki took the first set 6-4, but Mohr bounced back to take the match 7-6(4), 6-0.

No. 66 Maria Rizzolo dropped the first set 6-1 to Vanderbilt’s Amy Stevens, but came back from 4-1 deficit in the second set to take it 7-5. Ultimately, Stevens won the match with a 6-3 victory in the third.

Alexandra Mikhailuk fell to No. 53 Bridget Stammel 6-1, 6-1 as did ChloΓ© Cirotte to 98th-ranked Anessa Lee 6-2, 6-2.

Vanderbilt also took the double point earlier in the day as Anna Ross and Staff topped Antonaki and Cirotte 6-2 and Lee and Stammel defeated Cohen and Rizzolo 6-1.

The Commodores remain undefeated in conference play at 2-0 and are 8-3 overall.

Next Up

The Bulldogs hit the road for the first time this season as they head to state of Alabama. MSU faces Alabama on Friday, March 10 at 5 p.m. CT and then travel to Auburn on March 12 to play the Tigers at 12 p.m.
