Hokies take late-night match over Bellarmine, 7-0


BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech men’s tennis wrapped up a late night at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center with a 7-0 victory over Bellarmine on Sunday.
 
The result capped off a 2-0 day for the Hokies, who earned a 5-2 win over Charlotte approximately 12 hours earlier. 
 
Alberto Orso and Matt Harper were clinical on Court 2 with a 6-2 triumph to get doubles going, while Alex Ix and Michael Shepheard put the doubles point in Tech’s possession with a 6-4 result on Court 3.
 
Shepheard continued to dominate in singles, as he earned the Hokies’ first single point with a 6-2, 6-2 win on Court 4. Shortly after, freshman Benjamin Pomeranets shined in his Tech debut with a 6-1, 6-3 victory on Court 5. 
 
Maxime St. Hilaire moved to 3-0 in his Tech career and clinched his second team win of the day when he finished off a 6-3, 6-2 showing on Court 2. His doubles partner, 72nd-ranked Ryan Fishback extended Tech’s lead to 5-0 by replicating his teammates’ score on Court 1. 
 
Another rookie got in on the action, as Ilyas Fahim claimed a 7-5, 7-5 battle on Court 6 to complement his fellow freshman next to him, while the long day wrapped up just before midnight with Hugo Maia’s 6-4, 6(7)-7, 1-0(6) decision on Court 3.
