Gear Up for Nationals - University of Arizona Athletics

TUCSON, Ariz.– After an amazing performance at the ITA Southwest Regionals in Los Angeles, Calif. The Wildcats take their place in the National setting after earning their titles of ITA Southwest Regionals Doubles and Singles Champions. No.23 Colton Smith and doubles partner, No.87 Jay Friend  head to San Diego, Calif. For the ITA Fall Nationals tournament.

The 2023 ITA Fall National Championship will take place Nov. 1-5 at the Barnes Tennis Center. This will mark the end of the fall season for our Wildcats as many of our team will be competing Thursday in the USD Hidden Duals event. Both singles and doubles matches will begin tomorrow starting at 9:00 am.

Smith will be appearing in both brackets of the tournament after gaining his two championships in Los Angeles, Calif. With Friend as his doubles partner they continue to write program history by getting this far into the ITA fall season events. Representing on the National stage is huge for these two amazing athletes and for Arizona Athletics.

“Excited for Colton and Jay to represent the Wildcats at the Fall Nationals. It is the first time we have sent a player here in my 8 years as head coach, so a tremendous honor. If you are in the draw, you have earned your spot. Colton and Jay have certainly done that this fall. These two are playing well and with a lot of confidence. I’m excited to see how far they’ll take it. “, states Coach Clancy.

Good luck to these Wildcats as they make their mark on the national stage.
