ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Five University of Michigan varsity athletic teams achieved perfect multiyear scores in the 2020-21 Academic Progress Rate (APR) data released by the NCAA national office Tuesday (June 14) as part of the annual NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program.

Following a one-year hiatus in 2021, The Board of Directors reinstituted the release of APR information to reestablish the primacy of academics in the NCAA mission. The data for all schools includes the most current multiyear cohort (2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21 academic years).

All 27 Michigan teams included in the report scored well above the threshold required by the NCAA for good standing, highlighted by the five with perfect multiyear scores of 1,000: men’s basketball, women’s basketball, women’s gymnastics, softball and women’s tennis.

Michigan is one of 30 schools from the Bowl Subdivision to earn a multiyear score of 980 or greater in the sport of football.

In addition to the perfect multiyear scores, 20 U-M athletic teams recorded perfect scores for the 2020-21 academic year.

The APR is a real-time measure of a team’s academic performance and is calculated by reviewing variables such as eligibility, retention and graduation rates of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team.

In order to compete in the postseason, teams must achieve a 930 four-year APR. NCAA member representatives chose the 930 standard because that score predicts a 50 percent graduation rate for the team. Additionally, teams must earn at least a 930 APR to avoid penalties, although penalties remain suspended by the Board as are the Public Recognition Awards for top-performing schools.

Following are the University of Michigan APR multiyear and 2020-21 scores by sport:
