Fery Defeats Nation’s No. 1 Player but Bulldogs Top Cardinal

ORLANDO, Fla. – The first matchup of the Pac-12/SEC Showdown went down to the wire, but No. 13 Georgia topped No. 16 Stanford, 4-3, at the USTA National Campus on Saturday.

Arthur Fery earned a straight-set win over the nation’s No. 1 player, Ethan Quinn, 7-6 (8), 6-3. Fery improves to 7-3 in his career against top-20 opponents, while the win marks his first over an ITA No. 1 singles player.

The Cardinal dug an early hole, as Georgia won the doubles point and two of the first three singles matches. A win from Filip Kolasinski on court six had the Cardinal trailing 3-1 with three courts to go.

Samir Banerjee scored a straight-set win on three, 6-3, 6-4, for his first-career ranked win, and he was followed by Fery on court one to tie the match at 3-3.

Basing fought back from a one-set deficit to tie the match at 1-1, but was outlasted by the nation’s No. 10 player in the second slot in three sets.
