Duke Sweeps ACC Weekly Tennis Awards

DURHAM – The ACC announced Tuesday that Duke men’s tennis swept the league’s weekly awards after earning both the player and doubles team of the week.

For the second consecutive week, the Blue Devil tandem of senior Garrett Johns and freshman Pedro Rodenas collected ACC Doubles Team of the Week nods, while Rodenas also garnered solo praise as the conferences’ player of the week.

The pair helped Duke finish 2-0 last weekend with two top-25 wins over No. 16 Wake Forest and No. 23 NC State.

Johns and Rodenas began the weekend in a tight contest with Jurabek Karimov and Luciano Tacchi of Wake Forest on Friday before the Blue Devils secured the doubles points and the match was halted. The pair then picked up their second ranked victory of the year on Sunday when they beat No. 27 Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli of NC State.

The twosome have won their last eight matches and currently sit with a 12-2 mark in dual doubles action. They also are a perfect 5-0 in ACC action and when playing on court one.

In singles play, Rodenas finished 2-0, including a ranked win over No. 72 Luca Staeheli of NC State. In addition, he secured the match-clinching victory against Wake Forest on Friday when he bested Filippo Morini on court two.

On the year, he leads the team with an 18-2 dual singles record, including an undefeated 9-0 mark on court two. He is also 8-1 during ACC play.

The Blue Devils travel to nearby North Carolina on Saturday for a showdown with the Tar Heels at 2:30 p.m. at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
