CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke women’s tennis team featured a solid start at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Sectionals at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill on Thursday as the Blue Devils won five-of-the-six matches.
In singles action, the Blue Devils picked up wins in three of the four matches.
Shavit Kimchi, a 38th-ranked product of Sdey Hemed, Israel, totaled a ranked victory as she registered a 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5) straight-set win over No. 125 Gayathri Krishnan of Columbia. On another court, 53rd-ranked Ellie Coleman totaled a 7-5, 6-2 victory against Eileen Wang of Penn. Rounding out the Blue Devils advancing was 41st-ranked Emma Jackson, who didn’t lose a game notching a 6-0, 6-0 win versus Mirabelle Brettkelly of Yale.
Duke junior Katie Codd, who is listed No. 49 nationally, dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision to NC State’s Mia Slama.
In the evening, two Blue Devil doubles teams took the court.
After falling behind, 4-1, in the first set, Duke’s tandem of Irina Balus and Coleman stormed back to take the match, 7-5, 6-3, against Virginia’s Sara Ziodato and Margaret Navarro. The Blue Devils also received a 7-6, 4-1 victory by 58th-ranked Eleana Yu and Jackson against Virginia Tech’s Charlotte Cartledge and Ozlem Uslu.
Duke will continue action on Friday.
The 2024 ITA Sectional Championships will have a draw size of 32 for singles and 16 for doubles. From this, six singles players from each section (24 in all) will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship (semifinalists, two quarterfinal playoff winners). Meanwhile, three doubles teams from each section (12) will qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship through the Sectional Championships (champion, finalist, third place).
