Duke Earns Player and Doubles Team of the Week


DURHAM – For the fourth time this season, Duke men’s tennis earned two of the ACC’s three weekly awards after securing both the player and doubles team of the week.
 
Sophomore Pedro Rodenas garnered solo praise as the ACC’s player of the week for the second time this season, while the Blue Devil tandem of Rodenas and redshirt senior Garrett Johns collected the conference’s doubles team of the week nod for the third time.
 
Rodenas finished 4-0 on the week with two ranked singles wins and two ranked doubles victories. At No. 2 singles, the sophomore defeated Wake Forest’s No. 69 DK Suresh Ekambaram in straight sets 6-0, 6-4, before taking down NC State’s No. 79 Braden Shick 6-1, 6-4. The Madrid, Spain, native is now ranked No. 43 nationally in the latest ITA rankings released Tuesday. He is currently riding a seven-match winning streak in singles.
 
In doubles play with Johns, the pairing downed the No. 1 team nationally in Suresh Ekambaram and Holden Koons of Wake Forest, 7-6 (2) on Friday to clinch the doubles point for Duke and helped the Blue Devils hand the Demon Deacons their first home loss of the year. Then on Sunday, the duo defeated NC State’s No. 72 Martin Borisiouk and Joseph Wayand, 6-4. The duo is now ranked No. 1 in the nation in the latest ITA rankings and hold a nine-match winning streak.

Duke turns its attention to the ACC Championships, which take place at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C., from April 17-21. The Blue Devils await their opponent as they will face the winner of the Boston College/Miami vs. North Carolina contest which takes place on Thursday at 10 a.m. Duke’s quarterfinal match is scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m.
