Ducks Open Pac-12 Play in the Desert


EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women’s tennis team, ranked No. 53 in the latest ITA rankings, makes the trek to the desert for its first Pac-12 weekend, as the Ducks will take on 43rd-ranked Arizona Friday and No. 25 Arizona State Sunday.

The Ducks have won four of their last five matches following a 4-3 road win at UC Santa Barbara last weekend. The victory against the Gauchos marked UO’s first road win of the spring season.
 
The doubles tandem of Jo-Yee Chan and Ares Teixido Garcia remained perfect this season and extended their unbeaten streak to eight straight, playing primarily at the No. 2 position. The Ducks’ top pair of Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral are 5-3 this spring, but saw their four-match winning streak end at UCSB.
 
On the singles side, Chan and Martinez Moral are both riding six-match winning streaks after straight-set wins last Sunday. Martinez Moral is 5-0 at the fourth position while Chan, a freshman, is 5-0 at the fifth spot.
 
Martinez Moral is a team-best 8-1 overall this spring while Teixido Garcia is 7-3.
 
Arizona and Arizona State will mark the second and third ranked matches on the Ducks’ schedule. The Wildcats are 6-0 at home but are coming off back-to-back losses against top-50 squads in No. 47 Texas Tech and No. 32 Illinois.
 
ASU suffered a 5-2 loss to No. 6 Ohio State in its last outing and is 1-2 against ranked teams this season. The Sun Devils advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a season ago.
 
UO upended 25th-ranked Arizona State last season in Eugene, 4-3, but fell to UA, 5-2.
