Ducks Drop Tough Match to KU

Portland

STILLWATER, Okla. – On the final day of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at Greenwood Tennis Center, the Oregon women’s tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to Kansas Sunday.

Action started with a hotly contested doubles point that came down to a tiebreaker on Court 1, with KU’s top doubles pair of Heike Van Vuuren and Malkia Ngounoue outlasting Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral, 7-6 (8-6).

Jo-Yee Chan and Ares Teixido Garcia got the Ducks on the board with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles before Karin Young and Myah Petchey fell 6-3 at No. 3. Chan and Teixido Garcia improved their record to 2-0 in the young spring season.

Two of the Jayhawks’ three singles wins required three sets. Chan overcame a 6-3 first-set loss to force a final set with a 6-2 win in the second. Kansas’ Marina Velasquez finished the win at No. 6 with a 6-3 outcome in the third set.

At No. 3 singles, Teixido Garcia went the full three sets with Carmen Roxana Manu. Teixido Garcia won the first set 6-2 before Roxana Manu rallied to take the next two sets, 6-1, 6-3.

Martinez Moral was on her way to a third set before the Jayhawks clinched their fourth and final point while Luescher, playing at No. 1, nearly forced a third set against the nation’s 26th rated player in Malkia Ngounoue.

The Ducks return home to take on Portland on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Student Tennis Center.
