Doubles Play Highlights Day 2 of Duck Invitational

EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women’s tennis team continued its strong start to the fall campaign Saturday, going 3-0 in doubles while splitting four singles matches on the second day of the Duck Invitational at the UO Student Tennis Center.

The Ducks swept all three doubles matches against Portland State to kick start the day. Mixing lineups and doubles pairings, Jo-Yee Chan partnered with newcomer and LSU transfer Nina Geissler, who made her Oregon debut Saturday. The duo took care of business against the Vikings’ Capu Sanoner and Elizabeth Strongina, 6-0.

Returners Sophie Luescher and Karin Young handled PSU’s Makota Ohara and Scarlett Perkins, 6-2. Fifth-year senior Uxia Martinez Moral and freshman Candela Aparisi, both natives of Valencia, Spain, won the final three games of their match to overtake Nika Beukers and Momoko Yoshimura, 6-4.

Chan (2-0), Luescher (3-0) and Martinez Moral (3-0) each went unbeaten in doubles action in the first fall event. As a team, the Ducks posted a combined 6-1 doubles mark against the field of Portland, Portland State and Washington State.

Following doubles play, Oregon and conference foe Washington State squared off in singles matches, with the teams splitting across four courts. Luescher rebounded from a first-set loss (2-6) to win in a third-set tiebreaker over Yura Nakagawa, 6-2, 10-7, remaining perfect in both singles and doubles over the weekend.

Karin Young cruised in straight sets over Martina Markova, 6-1, 6-2, to push her fall singles record to 2-0.

Aparisi and Hania Abouelsaad played a pair of competitive sets, but Abouelsaad walked away with a win after needing a second-set tiebreaker, 7-5, 7-6 (5). Martinez Moral, after dropping the opening set 7-5, led her opponent in Fifa Kumhom 3-1 in the second, but was forced to retire.

The Ducks are 5-3 thus far in singles over two days, with more singles matches to come on Sunday against Portland. The three-day Duck Invitational concludes Sunday at the UO Student Tennis Center, with the Ducks and Pilots resuming singles at approximately 11 a.m. All Oregon tennis matches are free and open to the public.
