Dawgs Fall At Boise State In 4-3 Battle

BOISE, Idaho – Washington went back and forth and down to the wire with another ranked opponent on the road today, but came up on the short end of a 4-3 match at No. 63 Boise State. It’s the second straight tough 4-3 loss for the Huskies who lost by the same score at 39th-ranked Pepperdine last week. The teams split the six singles matches today but Boise State took the doubles point to make the difference.

Dzianis Zharyn got the Huskies (6-10) on the board with a big ranked win at the No. 2 spot, taking out 98th-ranked Jip Van Assendelft, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Ivan Sodan then tied the dual up at 2-2 with a 7-6 (1), 6-2 win over John Chin at No. 5 singles.

But Boise State retook the lead as James Van Herzeele held off Han-Chih Lin in two tight sets at No. 3 singles, 7-6 (1), 6-4.

With two matches remaining, Nedim Suko was up early in a third set on court four, and Cesar Bouchelaghem started a second set tiebreak, having lost set one in another tiebreak. Bouchelaghem came through with a 7-4 win to extend his match to a third set as well.

Suko took an early 3-0 lead on court four and the junior pushed on to a 6-2 victory over Jett Middleton, earning his second-straight third set comeback win. That tied it up at 3-3, but court one was quickly turning to the home team. After Bouchelaghem won the second set, 110th-ranked Samuel Sippel broke serve in the opening game of the third set and never looked back. Sippel won every game in the final set to secure the win and end the match.

The Broncos took the doubles point for the 1-0 lead to start the match. Zharyn and Bouchelaghem earned a 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot over Marquardt/Sippel, but BSU had 6-3 wins on both courts two and three, with court two clinching it.

The Huskies have one more road match, a sixth-straight, on Friday at Utah as they return to conference play. That match in Salt Lake City is set for a 2 p.m. Pacific start.
