Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina has announced the promotion of Axel Damiens to Associate Head Coach of the women’s tennis team. Now entering his third season on the staff at South Carolina, this will be Damiens’ sixth year in the collegiate coaching circuit.
During the 2023-24 season, Damiens helped the Gamecocks to a winning record and improved the program’s placement in the final ITA Team Rankings by more than 15 spots compared to 2023.
Damiens recruiting efforts have already secured a top-10 recruiting class for the 2024-25 season that includes Helena Buchwald of Germany and Jana Stojanova of Macedonia. He has also added former blue chip recruit Kaitlyn Carnicella to the team as a transfer.
Prior to his time with the Gamecocks, Damiens spent a semester as the assistant coach at Penn, was a graduate assistant at Florida State, and served as a volunteer assistant at Princeton.
Damiens first entered the world of college tennis in 2014 as a player at Cal Poly where he amassed 50 singles wins and helped his team reach as high as No. 33 in the ITA Team Rankings. During his senior season, he was named to the All-Big West Doubles First Team and later served as a student assistant coach.
Professionally, Damiens played in several ITF pro Tournaments and in a pro league in France.
