Cougars Run Winning Streak to Four, Defeat Fresno State 5-2


SPOKANE, Wash. – Washington State Tennis ran its winning streak to four following a 5-2 victory over Fresno State Saturday afternoon at the Stevens Center. With the win, the Cougars improve to 8-2 on the season while the Bulldogs fall to 6-5.
 
The day began with doubles and the Cougars jumped out quick to secure the opening point. At No. 2, Yura Nakagawa and Fifa Kumhom cruised to a 6-1 win over Carolina Piferi and Eliza Dunbar while the point was clinched at No. 3 where Hania Abouelsaad and Martina Markov completed a 6-2 win over Charlotte Gisclon and Mariya Vyshkina. At No. 1, The Cougar du of Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse were leading Misaki Kobayashi and Matilde Magrini 5-4 when the match was halted.
 
In singles action, the Cougars captured four of six matches to secure the team win. Kumhom got it started with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Vyshkina at No. 4 just before Abouelsaad completed a 6-4, 6-3 win over Gisclon at No. 5.
 
Fresno State cut into the lead as Piferi posted a three-set win over Nakagawa, 0-6, 6-4, 6-0 while Hannah Pieper rallied from a set down to defeat Markova, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 6.
 
The clinching match came down to No. 1 where Alvarez Sande needed three sets to defeat Magrini, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, giving WSU an insurmountable 4-2 lead with one match remaining. In that match, Tse increased her dual-match record to 10-0 this season with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Kobayashi at No. 3 to complete the win.
 
WSU returns to the court Friday when it travels to Los Angeles to begin Pac-12 Conference play at UCLA.
