Cougars Return Home to Face Bay Area Schools


(April 11, 2024) THIS WEEK: Washington State Tennis (10-8, 1-6) returns home for the first of three matches to end its regular-season schedule when it hosts the Bay Area schools for a pair of Pac-12 matches. The Cougars open the weekend vs. No. 3 Stanford, Friday, April 12 at Noon. at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. The following day, WSU hosts No. 9 California in an 11 a.m. match at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.

SCOUTING STANFORD: The No. 3 Cardinal enters Friday’s match with a 16-2 overall record, 5-1 in Pac-12 play. Stanford’s only two losses have come against current No. 1 Oklahoma State and No. 15 UCLA. The Cardinal currently have three players in the national singles rankings, led by No. 10 Connie Ma. Ma and Alexandra Yepifanova are ranked No. 32 in doubles. Stanford leas the all-time series, 37-0.
 
SCOUTING CALIFORNIA: California enters Saturday’s match with a 14-4 overall record, 6-1 in Pac-12 play, to go with its No. 9 national ranking. It’s its last outing, Cal posted a 4-3 win over No. 7 Pepperdine. The Golden Bears have four players nationally ranked in singles, led by No. 39 Hannah Viller Moeller. Viller Moeller and Mao Mushika are ranked No. 22 in doubles. Cal holds a 26-2 lead in the all-time series.
 
LAST TIME OUT: The Cougars dropped a 5-2 decision at Arizona that was closer than the final score indicated. WSU dropped the final two matches after leading 5-4 and 6-5, respectively, in the third set of each match.  
 
NEXT UP: Following this weekend’s matches, the Cougars close out their regular season by hosting No. 26 Washington Friday, April 19. The match will mark Senior Day for the Cougars.
 
HOLLINGBERY RENOVATION: The Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse underwent a renovation in December of 2023. A new playing surface was installed along with branded backdrops around the four courts.
 
ROSTER BREAKDOWN: For the 2023-24 season the Cougars will have one new player accompanying the seven returners. The roster consists of seniors Fifa Kumhom and Hania Abouelsaad, juniors Maxine Murphy and Elyse Tse, along with sophomores Eva Alvarez Sande, Yura Nakagawa and Tiffany Phout. Freshman Martina Markov joins the Cougar lineup this season.
