Cougars Post 7-0 Victory at Portland State


BEAVERTON, Ore. – Washington State Tennis ended its two-match skid as it came away with a 7-0 victory over Portland State Saturday at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center. With the win, WSU improves to 5-2 on the season while the Vikings fall to 2-3.
 
After dropping the doubles point Friday at Portland, the Cougars left no doubt Saturday who was ready to start fast. WSU rolled in each of the three doubles matches to take the opening point. First to finish was Yura Nakagawa and Fifa Kumhom at No. 2 following a 6-1 win over Scarlett Perkins and Maddie Egan. At No. 1, Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse clinched the point with a 6-2 win over Nika Beukers and Capu Sanoner before Hania Abouelsaad and Martina Markov completed a 6-3 win over Elizabeth Strongina and Makoto O’Hara at No. 3.
 
In singles action, Tse quickly pushed WSU’s lead to 2-0 as she won the first set 6-2 against Momoko Yoshimura at No. 4, before Yoshimura retired. Alvarez Sande was next as she cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Strongina at No. 1. WSU clinched the match at No. 3 when Kumhom defeated O’Hara, 6-2, 6-1 to give WSU a 4-0 lead with three matches remaining.
 
Abouelsaad cruised after a close first set as she defeated Perkins, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5, ahead of Markov’s three-set win over Egan, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 6. The final match of the day saw Nakagawa come-from-behind to defeat Beukers, 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 at No. 2.
 
WSU is next in action Feb. 24 when it hosts Montana at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
