Cougars Host Washington on Senior Day


THIS WEEK: Washington State Tennis (10-10, 1-8) concludes it 2024 regular season when it hosts No. 26 Washington, Friday, April 19 at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts at 1:30 p.m. The match is part of the Boeing Apple Cup Series. Fans attending the match will be treated to free snacks and bottled water.

SENIOR DAY CEREMONY: Prior to Friday’s match, WSU Tennis will honor senior Fifa Kumhom in a pre-match ceremony celebrating her time in a Couger uniform. That event is scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m.
 
SCOUTING WASHINGTON: The No. 26 Huskies enters Friday’s match with a 15-9 overall record, 4-5 in Pac-12 play. Washington currently has two players in the national singles rankings, led by No. 94 Astrid Olsen and No. 103 Alexia Jacobs. Olsen and Jacobs are ranked No. 44 in doubles. Washington leads the all-time series, 51-13.
 
LAST TIME OUT: The Cougars dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 9 California that was closer than the final score indicated. WSU won at No. 1 singles, lost 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 and dropped three-set matches at No. 4 and 5.
 
NEXT UP: Following this weekend’s matches, the Cougars head to the 2024 Pac-12 Championships in Ojai, Calif., April 24-27.
 
HOLLINGBERY RENOVATION: The Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse underwent a renovation in December of 2023. A new playing surface was installed along with branded backdrops around the four courts.
 
ROSTER BREAKDOWN: For the 2023-24 season the Cougars will have one new player accompanying the seven returners. The roster consists of seniors Fifa Kumhom and Hania Abouelsaad, juniors Maxine Murphy and Elyse Tse, along with sophomores Eva Alvarez Sande, Yura Nakagawa and Tiffany Phout. Freshman Martina Markov joins the Cougar lineup this season.
 
COACH RAQUEL ATAWO: Raquel Atawo is in her third season as head coach of the Cougars after being named to the position July 2, 2021. Atawo arrived in Pullman having spent the 2021 season as the assistant coach at Auburn and prior to that, spent 15 years on the WTA Tour, where she reached a No. 10 world ranking in doubles.
